Communication in Every Profession
With the increasing attention to Health service professions and with the increasing concerns in health, Health Communication has become one of the most important aspects of the communication field. Health Communication Theories basically address societal concerns about health of individuals. Come to think of it, communication in every profession is as equally important as Health Communication. Thus, it will be beneficial that as we explore Health Communication Theories, we also consider other theories highly relevant to the communication processes whether at the interpersonal or organizational or mass media level. Communication in every profession is vital. The Social Cognitive Theory asserts that people, their behaviors and the environment are constantly influencing each other. Studies have shown that genetic (hereditary) and other biological factors within individuals can be reinforced or overcome through inherent and intervening factors or interventions in the environment. Of these environmental interventions communication play a big role. Thus, we can say that communication is vital in society's maintenance of culture, societal order and in its achievement of goals. Communication, must however, penetrate individuals and organizations to achieve the desired outcomes or situations. As you may have already learned from our previous lessons and discussions, so many factors could render the effectiveness and ineffectiveness of any communication approach or messages. This Week 5, let's continue to explore factors for communication effectiveness and failures. Watch these two videos on Behavior Change Theory or Approach:

Based on what you have learned from these two videos, explain how behavior change programs and campaign messages could vary in their degree of influence on individuals by using the core assumptions of the following models listed below. Best if you can share relevant experiences and observations in your discussion.
▪ Elaboration Likelihood Model [helps explain the degree of attention and thought
processing one gives to a message or information]
▪ Health Belief Model [the degree to which individuals anticipate the negative effects
of a practice or habit determines the possibility of persuading individuals to quit
undesirable practices, habit and behaviors] [Want watch a video instead? Go

▪ Social Support [associated with how networking helps people cope with stressful
events. The theory also helps probe the value of loved ones’ and friends’ support
around a person who is sick}
▪ Theory of Planned Behavior/ Reasoned Action[Theory of Reasoned Action suggests
that a person's behavior is determined by his/her intention to perform the behavior
and that this intention is, in turn, a function of his/her attitude toward the behavior
and his/her subjective norm. The best predictor of behavior is intention.]
▪ Transactional Model of Stress and Coping [helps predict how one would adapt and
reduce stressors (cope with stress]. Post your response in our Week 5 Discussion

The use of technology dominates human communication. Using our main resource at the University of Twente, review the assumptions of:
1) Media Richness Theory (recall also our previous lesson/notes on this theory)
2) Computer Mediated Communication
3) Reduces Social Cues
4) Social Presence Theory
1. What do you see as similarities or likeness among these theories based on their
assumptions or assertions?
2. In your proposed study and planned communication campaign in Week 3, what do
you see are the importance of considering your target population’s use of
technology?
Note: Remember that individuals vary in their abilities to perceive and interpret messages, lessons, and instructions. Do not hesitate to contact me for any difficulties you are having regarding this week's learning tasks.
